Upgrade Your 3G Security System
The 3G network shutdown will impact more than your mobile phones. The shutdown will also have a large impact on anyone currently using a 3G security system, fire alarm or emergency alert device. Roughly 2 million devices will go offline, starting today.
5G is the new standard in communication technology. It promises a more efficient use of the electronic band width and better reception. 5G technology will greatly reduce the time it takes for devices to communicate with one another. This should allow for signals to communicate faster, reducing the amount of time needed to notify the appropriate parties about an alarm or trouble condition.
AT&T is scheduled to turn off its 3G cellular network as of February 22, 2022. T-Mobile is scheduled to turn its off on July 1, 2022, and Verizon is set to follow suit on Dec. 31, 2022.
If you have a 3G security system, it needs to be replaced by a technician to avoid potential disruptions. The good news is you do not need to replace your whole system. The only equipment that requires an update is the Cellular Communicator. Without this update, your alarm may appear to function, but it will no longer communicate with the central station to notify us when emergency services are needed.
AARP worries that the elderly will be most vulnerable to this change. Older Americans are least likely to adopt new technology. This will especially effect those using medical fall detectors. This means several people are going to think that their device works, they’re going to hit the button for emergency services, and it’s not going to go anywhere. Take a moment to remind your loved ones of these changes.
