15 Home Security Myths
Throughout the years we have come across several home security myths from potential customers. We are here to provide you with the accurate information you need when it comes to protecting your home.
We are often called after a burglary has already been committed at a site that was previously unprotected. In most cases, the home or business owner could have easily avoided their losses by having already installed a basic alarm system.
Myth #1: All companies are national providers
Fact: Not all home security companies are national providers. Executive Security Consultants is a local, family owned business. Unlike national providers, we treat each customer as an individual, not a number. We are deeply invested in the safety of our customers and our Columbus area community.
Myth #2: A subcontractor will install your security system
Fact: Some security companies use subcontractors that are not directly affiliated with their company. At Executive Security Consultants we do not use subcontractors. Anytime a technician needs to enter your home you will be meeting with a trusted member of our team. We have car logos and ID badges to identify ourselves before entering your home.
Myth #3: All security companies provide a free consultation
Fact: Not all security companies provide a free consultation. The majority of DIY home security companies do not provide onsite consultations. Executive Security Consultants provides a free consultation to all potential customers.
Myth #4: All pricing includes professional installation
Fact: Home security companies often have hidden fees and extra charges for installation of their products. We believe in full transparency. Our pricing at Executive Security Consultants includes professional installation.
Myth #5: Security Systems are not affordable
Fact: You can customize a basic security system for your home for under $50.00. Executive Security Consultants offers a home security starter kit online for only $49.00. This includes your touchscreen Panel, LTE Cellular Communicator, Siren, Back Up Battery, 3 Wireless Door Sensors and your choice between a Motion Sensor or Glass Break Sensor. We believe that security should be inclusive and affordable for everyone.
Myth #6: Home security systems are hard to use
Fact: Monitoring your security system has never been easier. Executive Security Consultants offers customers a user-friendly app that is simple to navigate for all ages. This allows users to arm and disarm their system from anywhere, at any time. There are a wide variety of notifications and alerts already built in to simplify your daily routines. The mobile security app allows you to control smart devices in your home and watch live video. We are able to customize your system to meet the needs of your home and your family.
Myth #7: Burglars can cut the phone line and disable my alarm
Fact: Burglars cannot simply cut the phone line to disable a wireless system. The majority of security systems operate completely wirelessly, which eliminates the need for a landline. Our LTE Cellular communicator provides fast and reliable connectivity, even during a power outage.
Myth #8: A dog is enough protection
Fact: Dogs help provide extra peace of mind, but they are not able to alert the police during an emergency. Intruders can quiet dogs with treats or other distractions. In the worst-case scenario, an intruder even could harm your dog in order to keep it quiet. Dogs also go with you on walks, to the park or away for the weekend. Often times, pet owners leave their dog with family while they are out of town, when their home is most vulnerable.
Myth #9: All security technicians are required to go through the same training
Fact: Some providers have more experience and training than others. Our technicians are highly qualified, continually educated, and trained by our product manufacturers to ensure that your system’s installation is conducted with the highest level of expertise. Doug Huey, the owner and founder of Executive Security Consultants, received his training in wiring and electronics through the Ohio National Guard where he served as an Electronics Specialist for six years before launching his career in residential security in 1982.
Myth #10: All security companies have the same values
Fact: Not all companies have the same values. Doug’s interest in home security dates back to his childhood when his grandfather tragically lost his life at the hands of a home intruder. Doug believes that had home security technology existed at that time, this tragedy might have been avoided. This is why he began working for the first residential security provider before establishing The Executive Security Consultants in 1988. We believe nothing is more valuable than the safety of your family.
Myth #11: All providers use the same equipment
Fact: Many providers use different brands and equipment. Executive Security Consultants offers the most comprehensive, state of the art alarm technology on the market; the 2Gig-Go! Control Security and Automation System®. The new touch screen LTE panels have police, fire and medical buttons at your fingertips in case of emergencies.
Myth #12: All monitoring centers are equal
Fact: A security system is only as good as its monitoring center. This why we use Affiliated Monitoring’s UL Listed, TMA Five Diamond Certified and FDNY Approved monitoring center. We assure that your home or business will be handled the same as any high-risk account.
Myth #13: Having a home security system does not lower your home insurance rate
Fact: Homeowner’s insurance companies provide between a 5% to 20% discount on premiums for customers who install a security system. Your home insurance agent will need a certification of installation provided by your alarm company. If you have cameras, saved footage can also aid in filing a claim. The more documentation you have, the faster the claims process is going to be.
Myth #14: It won’t happen to me
Fact: There is one burglary every 13 seconds in The United States. The absence of a home security system increases the likelihood that your house will be robbed by 300 percent. We often hear “I live in a safe neighborhood; I don’t need a security system.” Sometimes this can make you a larger target.
Myth #15: Home security systems can easily be tampered with
Fact: “Smash and Crash” technology constantly monitors activity around the home to proactively protect you against events like a crash and smash burglary. In a crash and smash attack, the burglar tries to disable the panel before it can send the signal. Most systems allow 30 seconds before the signal goes through. If your panel suddenly goes offline before sending a disarm or emergency signal, it will be reported to your central monitoring station immediately. A trained security professional assesses the situation and quickly alerts law enforcement if it’s a crash and smash attack. You and your family will receive a call to alert you and prevent anyone from walking into a dangerous situation at home.
